From U.S. State Department's Traveler's Checklist:

Get Insured: The U.S. State Department recommends travelers purchase travel insurance for trips outside the U.S. Many foreign medical facilities may require up-front cash payment, and some U.S.-based medical insurance plans, including Medicare, may offer limited or no international coverage.

FAQs

What is covered under Medical Expense and Medical Evacuation benefits?

The Accident & Sickness Medical Expense benefit helps with costs related to unexpected illness or injury while traveling, such as hospital stays, outpatient care, and emergency treatments. The Medical Evacuation & Repatriation of Remains benefit may cover medically necessary transportation to another medical facility capable of treating your severe or life threatening condition(as determined by the attending physician and the non-insurance travel assistance partner) or even transport back home if continued treatment is deemed necessary. This coverage can also include repatriation of remains, which can help reduce emotional and financial burdens for your family in the unlikely event of death.

How does Medical Evacuation work?

If you're seriously injured or become ill on your trip, our non-insurance assistance partner can help coordinate a medical evacuation and pay for your transfer to the closest appropriate medical facility if none are available in your immediate area and your condition is acute, severe, or life threatening. Our non-insurance assistance provider works with professional coordination teams to manage these logistics.

What are the benefits of purchasing travel protection for medical emergencies?

Medical emergencies can be expensive—especially abroad. Travel protection helps protect you from those costs and gives you access to 24/7 non-insurance assistance. This can help you find care quickly and confidently. In some plans, coverage may also extend to pre-existing conditions if certain requirements are met.* You’re not just covered financially. You’re supported by a team that can guide you through emergencies as they happen.

*Losses due to, arising or resulting from pre-existing medical conditions are normally excluded. However, such losses can be covered if you qualify for the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver.

Can my regular health insurance cover me abroad?

Most U.S.-based health plans offer little or no coverage while you’re traveling internationally. Some may only reimburse later or require care from in-network providers, which can be difficult to find abroad. Travel insurance for medical expenses and evacuation is designed to help with this and provide real-time support if you need it.

Could I need medical evacuation coverage if I’m not traveling to a remote area?

Even in well-developed cities, you may need evacuation if the local facility lacks the equipment or specialists required to treat your condition. Evacuation benefits are based on your medical needs. That could make this protection important for any traveler.

Does medical evacuation only cover transportation to the hospital?

Medical evacuation may include additional support, such as return transportation to your home country. It can also cover the coordination of your transfer and help you receive care from qualified providers throughout the process. Please see the plan document for the full benefit offering.

Can travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Our travel protection plans can offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, but certain requirements must be met. You need to purchase the plan within a set number of days from your initial trip deposit and be medically able to travel at that time to waive the exclusion. Always review your plan document carefully to understand what qualifies.

Can I purchase medical evacuation coverage after an emergency occurs?

No, travel protection must be purchased before your trip begins. Planning ahead helps you be covered and supported if the unexpected happens.
