Frequently Asked Questions

Does the trip delay benefit cover hotel stays if my trip is delayed?

The trip delay benefit can reimburse for hotel stays and more. Depending on your plan, you can be eligible for a daily amount to cover costs like hotel rooms and meals during your delay. If you’re unsure about your coverage with Travel Insured International, feel free to contact us for details.

Does the trip delay benefit cover meals or rental cars if my trip is delayed?

Meals can be covered, but rental cars usually aren’t. However, you might be eligible for reimbursement for some transportation costs, like getting to and from your hotel. If you have questions about what’s covered, our team is here to help you understand your plan details better.

What additional costs can be reimbursed if my trip is delayed?

Reimbursement is for reasonable necessary expenses, like meals and hotel stays during the delay or additional transportation costs. Please remember to keep your receipts for these expenses. Not sure what counts as “reasonable” and “necessary?” Our representatives can help clarify for you, so you know what to expect.

What do “reasonable additional expenses” and “additional transportation costs” mean?

Travel Insured’s plans have definitions for these two phrases:

“Reasonable additional expenses” means reasonable expenses for meals, essential telephone calls, local transportation, and lodging which are necessarily incurred as the result of a Common Carrier or Trip Delay and which are not provided by the Common Carrier or any other party free of charge.

“Additional transportation costs” means the actual cost incurred for one-way economy transportation (or for the original class of fare, if the original tickets were for a higher class of fare) by Common Carrier by the most direct route, less any refunds paid or payable, for Your unused original tickets.

How long does a delay due to a strike need to be before I am eligible for benefits?

An unannounced, strike-related delay must last a certain number of hours (3-12 hours, depending on your plan) to be covered by the trip delay benefit. Contact us for specifics about your coverage and how it may apply to strike delays.

What should I do if I need to use my trip delay benefit during a natural disaster?

If a natural disaster delays your trip, file a claim with us as soon as reasonably possible. We’ll work to review your claim and get you reimbursed for any eligible, related expenses. You can count on us to help sort it out so you can focus on getting back on track.

What types of transportation are covered under the trip delay benefit?

The trip delay benefit can cover additional transportation costs like airlines, passenger trains, long-distance buses, and ferries.

Got questions about your plan? Our friendly team can walk you through the details and make sure you know what could be covered.

When can I file a claim for trip delay due to weather or a common carrier delay?

Each plan has a specific travel delay length that must lapse before the benefit can be used. For each of our single-trip plans, it ranges from 3 hours to 12 hours. Our team is happy to explain your plan and help with claim questions so you can travel with more confidence instead of focusing on potential issues.

Are there exclusions for the trip delay benefit?

There are general exclusions in your plan that apply to all losses and all benefits. Some of these include being under the influence, war, or getting your belongings confiscated by customs. All exclusions can be found in your plan document. For more details, contact our team—we’re here to help!
