Additional Helpful Information

Here are answers to common questions travelers have about Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage:

What types of trips can be covered with Cancel for Any Reason?

The Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance benefit typically covers a wide range of trip types, including but not limited to these:

  • Leisure Travel: Vacations, cruises, and personal getaways
  • Business Trips: Work-related travel, conferences, and events
  • Family Visits: Trips to see relatives or attend family events
  • Educational Travel: Study abroad programs or educational tours
  • Adventure Travel: Outdoor or activity-based trips

Can I use CFAR to cancel for reasons like bad weather or a family emergency and get reimbursed?

Yes, CFAR allows you to cancel for nearly any reason that isn’t already covered under Trip Cancellation, including concerns about bad weather or family matters, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. Unlike the trip cancellation benefit, which only covers specific events like hurricanes or medically certified emergencies, CFAR gives you more freedom to cancel based on your personal judgment.

For example, if severe storms are forecasted at your beach destination, you may no longer want to take the trip, even if the storm is not covered under Trip Cancellation. With CFAR, you don’t need to wait for an official disruption to be eligible for reimbursement.

This flexibility can be great for travelers seeking greater control over their plans. CFAR lets you prioritize your comfort, rather than being bound by the “covered reasons” found in traditional trip cancellation coverage.

If I change my mind about a trip, can I still get my money back?

The CFAR benefit is designed to help travelers whose plans or preferences change for any reason. Whether you’ve decided the destination no longer appeals to you, the timing isn’t ideal, or you simply no longer feel like traveling, CFAR allows you to cancel and get some reimbursement.

For instance, imagine booking a trip to a bustling city, only to later realize that you’re more interested in exploring a more laid-back tropical island. With CFAR, you can cancel your original trip and recover up to 75% of your prepaid expenses, giving you more flexibility to plan a new adventure that better suits your interests.

This level of adaptability may make CFAR appealing to travelers who value spontaneity or who face potential disruptions due to various commitments.

Is there a limit to how many times I can use the Cancel for Any Reason benefit?

CFAR coverage is tied to the specific trip for which it was purchased, meaning it applies to that one individual journey only. However, if you’re a frequent traveler, you can purchase CFAR each time you purchase a new protection plan. Each plan can be tailored to the trip it covers, providing some reassurance for those who frequently adjust their plans due to personal or professional reasons.

For example, let’s say you’re an avid traveler who takes three international vacations in a year—one to Europe in the spring, another to Asia in the summer, and a final one to South America in the winter. You can purchase the CFAR benefit for each trip, helping to protect your non-refundable travel expenses if circumstances change. Whether it’s a scheduling conflict, a personal decision to postpone travel, or an unexpected event, CFAR means you can get back some of your prepaid costs.

This benefit could also be useful for business travelers who often deal with dynamic schedules and shifting priorities. For instance, if you frequently travel for work and need to cancel a planned family vacation due to some work schedule changes, CFAR can allow you to adjust your plans without entirely losing your insured trip cost. (Such work related reasons may not already be a covered circumstance under Trip Cancellation.) Similarly, those managing multiple responsibilities, such as parents balancing family obligations, may rely on CFAR to accommodate changing circumstances.

Another advantage of purchasing CFAR is the extra freedom it may provide for flexible planning. If you’re someone who enjoys booking trips well in advance to secure good deals, CFAR can help protect your investment even if your preferences change months later. For instance, you might decide to cancel a planned beach vacation in favor of a mountain retreat or opt for a shorter trip closer to home. CFAR gives you more flexibility to adapt your plans, making it a great tool for travelers who value spontaneity or who frequently reevaluate their options.

Additionally, CFAR can be useful for travelers with dynamic or unpredictable schedules. For example, if you’re in a profession where personal travel plans might conflict with work deadlines, seasonal demands, or event-based commitments, CFAR offers some security. Even leisure travelers who plan group vacations with friends or extended family can benefit, as group dynamics or shared commitments often change unexpectedly.

For frequent travelers, CFAR may empower you to confidently plan your trips, knowing you can change your mind or adjust your schedule without the stress of losing all of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure—or a mix of both—this coverage helps you remain adaptable as your lifestyle demands.

What happens if I cancel my trip after the 48-hour deadline?

The CFAR benefit requires that you cancel your trip at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. If you cancel within that 48-hour window, the CFAR benefit will not apply. However, depending on the circumstances, other travel insurance benefits might still cover certain expenses.

For example, if you experience a sudden illness or an emergency within the 48-hour period, the standard trip cancellation portion of your plan could provide coverage, as long as the reason meets the criteria for a “covered reason.” It’s important to familiarize yourself with the terms of your plan to understand what options are available in different scenarios.

When able to, consider making cancellation decisions as early as possible. The 48-hour deadline is a critical component of CFAR coverage, so planning ahead may help you utilize this benefit.

Does Cancel for Any Reason cover flights, hotels, and activities?

The CFAR benefit can cover a wide range of prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses, including flights, accommodations, tours, and activities. Whether you’ve booked a non-refundable airline ticket, reserved a stay at a boutique hotel, or secured spots on a guided tour, CFAR can help your financial investment be protected if plans change.

For instance, travelers who book a package deal that combines flights, hotels, and excursions may benefit from CFAR’s protection. CFAR allows you to cancel the entire trip and recover up to 75% of those insured costs.

This coverage can be particularly useful for travelers who plan well in advance, as it helps protect against unforeseen changes that might occur between the time of booking and the trip itself. By covering a broad spectrum of travel-related expenses, CFAR may help support your planning and booking.

Can I cancel if I have a disagreement with my travel companion(s)?

Yes, CFAR gives you the flexibility to cancel for virtually any reason, including interpersonal issues with your travel companion(s). Whether it’s a breakup, disagreement about the itinerary, or a change in group dynamics, CFAR steps in so you’re not locked into plans that no longer feel right.

For example, if you’re traveling with friends and decide that their travel style doesn’t align with yours, CFAR allows you to cancel and recoup a portion of your costs. This feature can be particularly beneficial for group travelers, where differing expectations or conflicts can sometimes arise.

CFAR may empower you to prioritize your comfort and enjoyment, helping to make sure your travel plans remain a source of excitement rather than stress.

If I start my trip but need to cancel early, can I be covered?

CFAR (Cancel for Any Reason) applies strictly to cancellations made before your trip begins. Once your trip is underway, CFAR no longer applies, but other travel insurance benefits, such as Trip Interruption or Interrupt for Any Reason (IFAR), may provide support. This type of coverage is designed to help if unforeseen circumstances force you to cut your trip short.

Trip interruption coverage typically reimburses costs associated with returning home early and covers unused, prepaid portions of your trip, such as hotel stays, tours, or excursions. For instance, if you are halfway through a week-long vacation and need to leave due to an emergency at home, trip interruption coverage could help cover the cost of rebooking a flight and reimbursing the days of the hotel stay you didn’t use.

This benefit extends to a variety of unforeseen circumstances, such as:

  • Family Emergencies: If a loved one becomes seriously ill or passes away, trip interruption coverage can help you return home immediately.
  • Personal Illness or Injury: If you experience an illness or injury while traveling that makes it impossible to continue your trip, this coverage can help with additional travel expenses.
  • Natural Disasters: If a hurricane or another natural disaster disrupts your destination mid-trip, trip interruption coverage can assist in facilitating your return home and reimbursing unused trip costs.

Similar to CFAR, IFAR helps you leave your trip early for any reason that isn’t covered already under the Trip Interruption benefit, so long as you are 72 hours or more into your scheduled trip. While CFAR doesn’t cover mid-trip cancellations, trip interruption or IFAR benefits can provide some comfort for travelers. It means any unexpected changes once your journey has begun could be covered.

Do covered reasons for Trip Cancellation apply to Cancel for Any Reason?

CFAR addresses scenarios that standard trip cancellation benefits don’t cover. The Trip Cancellation travel insurance benefit only can reimburse for “covered reasons,” which can include specific, verifiable circumstances like illness, injury, or major travel disruptions such as airline strikes or natural disasters. CFAR extends coverage to include cancellations for any reason not covered by these outlined reasons.

For example, you might decide to cancel a trip because you no longer feel comfortable with the destination due to political events, even if travel advisories haven’t officially been issued. Or perhaps your schedule has changed, and the timing of your vacation no longer aligns with your availability. While these reasons wouldn’t be eligible for reimbursement under standard trip cancellation benefits, our cancel for any reason benefit could allow you to recover some of your costs.

Another way CFAR could come in handy is to address personal concerns, such as mental health. If you feel overwhelmed or anxious about an upcoming trip and decide not to go, you can cancel with CFAR. Similarly, if you’ve booked a vacation with friends and there’s been a disagreement or change in group dynamics, CFAR allows you to back out.

CFAR’s ability to cover personal, non-traditional reasons for cancellation can help to provide a sense of security, knowing you have travel protection even when life’s unexpected twists occur.

Are there any situations where I won’t get reimbursed under Cancel for Any Reason?

While CFAR is flexible, it does come with certain limitations that travelers should be aware of. One of the most important requirements is the 48-hour cancellation deadline. To qualify for reimbursement, you must cancel your trip at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. If you wait until the day before or the day of your trip, CFAR will not apply.

Additionally, CFAR reimbursement is capped at 75% of your non-refundable costs, meaning you won’t recover the full amount of your prepaid expenses. It’s important to note that fully refundable costs, such as airline tickets or hotel bookings with flexible cancellation policies, are not eligible for CFAR reimbursement. The benefit is reserved for non-refundable expenses that would otherwise result in a loss.

CFAR also doesn’t apply once your trip has started. If you need to cut your trip short, other benefits like trip interruption or IFAR coverage may provide support instead. For example, if you decide mid-trip that you’d like to return home early due to a change in plans, CFAR wouldn’t cover this decision. However, if the change is caused by a covered event such as illness or a natural disaster, trip interruption coverage might apply.

Finally, CFAR won’t cover cancellations that violate the terms of your plan. For instance, if you don’t purchase the plan and the optional benefit within the specified time frame from your initial trip deposit—14 days for Deluxe and 21 days for Platinum—you won’t be eligible for CFAR benefits.
